Last week was supposed to be easier for me due to school vacation week but it seemed that I had a busier than normal week.  Thursday was very productive day and thought it would be a good illustration of what a sole practitioner does.

I got up around 5am which is normal and took my two Bernese Mountain Dogs to Borderland State park.  The walk is a nice way to start the day and allows me to think through what I need to do and a plan.  I figured out some strategies for cases and organization.  I got back to my house and answered a few emails from the day before and dictated some letters and memo’s for one of my assistants.  I did the normal stuff to get ready and felt a little jealous of my wife – who is a school art teacher and son as they are on vacation.

I left my home around 8 am and went to Wareham District Court which ended up being being easy as I received some discovery , lobbied the case with the Judge and prepared a ptc and trial form and set the case for trial on a A&B with Dangerous weapon charge which I thing we have a strong case.  I am did note in my file an interesting evidence issue that can be disposition of the case and need to do a good legal memo.  I got out of court early and was able to go to a nursing home in Bedford to meet with two separate clients dealing with guardianship cases in Probate Court.  I was also able to speak to staff and review the client’s medical charts.

My next stop was Fall River Probate court.  I filed a joint petition for divorce and reviewed several files including regarding estates, custody, guardianship and others.  Both the visit to the nursing home and probate court were on my to do list for a few days and I was happy to have been able to complete them.

I had returned some pc’s on my cell phone along with emails after leaving Fall River.  I was able to speak to some one from Taunton Juvenile Court who was helpful and allowed me to advance a case on an ex parte basis for a child that I was representing for the next day. I also answered a questions from an assistant about another case, I was advancing that all the parties were able to agree on a custody/placement arrangement.

When I got back to my office in Taunton, I made several other phone calls and started preparing some of my cases for client interviews that day.    I had several interviews including 2 for chapter 7 bankruptcies, 2 for Chapter 13 Bankruptcies that my other assistant helped prepare and sat in for two of the interviews to help collect all the final information we needed.  I also had a child support matter, a new contempt and modification related to custody and visitation, a divorce mediation and a criminal case.  The meetings lasted to around 7pm.  Interspersed with the meetings were pc’s, faxes, emails and so forth.  It was a very busy but productive day.  I enjoyed working with my clients and trying to find the best solutions to their legal problems.

I left my office to coach my son’s basketball team and to get ready to start another day.
