You should dress in a way that is conservative and shows respect for the court. You also need to be appropriate by not chewing gum. You are not generally allowed to eat or drink in the courthouse; never mind the court room.

A crucial step is to be on time. If you miss the hearing, the Judge can actually make Orders against you. You should not bring your children to the court. When the Judge enters or leaves the room, the Court Officer will ask for people to sit or stand. If the Judge asks you a question; or you are speaking to the Judge, stand and speak when the Judge speaks to you. You should make sure you speak clearly and to be able to keep a record for and address the Judge; ideally you address the Judge as your Honor or Judge. Do not talk while you are leaving the hearing or in the hall, it can be a sign of disrespect for the Court.
