IN MASSACHUSETTS GUARDIANSHIPS – CHILDREN ARE ENTITLED IN MOST CASES TO A COURT APPOINTED ATTORNEY AND PARENTS ARE ALSO ENTITLED IF THEY ARE DETERMINED INDIGENT TO AGAIN A COURT APPOINTED ATTORNEY.

This is relatively new. It used to be that you would need to hire your own attorney, then only in DCF cases, criminal cases or other cases when an attorney be appointed, but now there have been a larger number of attorneys being appointed for both parents and children. It is not automatic, and somebody needs to make a request, but it is something that can be looked at, again for parents they would have to show that they were indigent.
