Generally, in Massachusetts, if you are a W2 employee, the child support guidelines are usually straightforward. There can be a lot closer looked at by the courts, and by the attorney for the other side, when determining self-employment income when calculating the child support guidelines. Tax returns, profit and loss statements are the key pieces for that, but the bank account deposits can also be looked at as well. Sometimes, looking at things like Cash App, Venmo, or seeing if the personal spending matches what somebody is looking to claim in the business. Also, whether the business expenses deductions are legitimate or not. The court can end up deciding that somebody’s income is underreported and calculate the child’s support with the court imputing income for that person.
