Again, having an attorney even in the very early stages, can really help the situation, but some of the things you might want to do if you are not going to be able to have an attorney is ask what the specific charges or allegations are; take notes; you want to stay on the topic of what the specific allegations are; do not allow it to be a fishing expedition by DCF; even if DCF social workers are inappropriate or say things that can get you upset; try and avoid swearing or losing your temper.

The worker may also want you to sign information releases. Be careful if you sign them or not, again it is a good thing to go over it with an attorney. Certainly, do not sign anything that you do not fully understand. If you are agreeable with it, sign it only regarding the specific person and the information sought. Generally, if you have a conclusion date that is beneficial as well.
