Typically, it does not keep the case from being investigated.  Although, DCF is aware that there can be ulterior motives, such as a breakup with a significant other or dispute between neighbors and that have things to do with other than the welfare of the child.  It is important to be able to advocate this and to show the reason for that even though the reporter is anonymous. Many times, it is easy to have a pretty good idea of who is doing the report. In addition, it is helpful to have an attorney request a copy of the DCF records to be able to show what the potential motive is. It is much easier to show the ulterior motive of a non-mandated reporter; such as an ex-boyfriend, girlfriend or someone that is trying to get you into trouble, then it is for a mandated reporter such as a police officer or therapist.
