DCF can either support or unsupported the allegation. The unsupported report means that DCF found that there is no evidence indicating that the children were abused or neglected. A supported report means that DCF believes that there is evidence tending to show that the child or children were abuse or neglected; or at risk for abuse and neglect. It is a very low burden and again, in another blog can talk about how you can appeal that.

If the report is supported, DCF could try and take custody of your children; or they may want to offer services to your family. In addition, sometimes DCF may try and have you agree to voluntarily place your children in foster care. If DCF asks you to sign a Voluntary Placement Agreement, again, it would be important to speak to a lawyer before deciding on whether to sign or not sign, and you should ask DCF for time to do that.

It is a significant decision, you have significant rights and there are real advantages and disadvantages depending on the particulars of the case about whether or not to sign a Voluntary Agreement; or if DCF decides that your children are at immediate risk if you do not sign it. Sometimes going to court is significantly better than signing a Voluntary Placement Agreement, other times it is not.

If you cannot afford an attorney, the court will generally appoint one for you as long as you meet the financial qualifications of being indigent.
